St. Lawrence University freshman forward Matt Carey has signed an NHL contract with the Chicago Blackhawks. The Hamilton, Ontario native inked a professional deal one day after his brother, Hobey Baker Finalist Greg Carey, signed with the Phoenix Coyotes.
Matt Carey finished fourth among NCAA rookies in points per game after compiling 18 goals and 19 assists for 37 points in 38 games played. Carey had to sit out last season due to complications with his academics. He is forgoing the final three years of collegiate eligibility to sign with the defending Stanley Cup champions.
It is likely that Carey will immediately report to the team's AHL franchise, the Rockford IceHogs.
