North Dakota's Nick Schmaltz Out Indefinitely

Bruce Bennett

North Dakota freshman forward Nick Schmaltz is out indefinitely, according to Brad Schlossman of the Grand Forks Herald. The North Dakota beat writer tweeted out Wednesday afternoon that head coach Dave Hakstol confirmed the news.

Schmaltz, a Madison, Wis. native who was selected 20th overall by the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2014 NHL Draft, had a goal and seven assists in nine games played so far this season. A product of the Chicago Mission youth program and the USHL's Green Bay Gamblers, he is the younger brother and teammate of St. Louis Blues prospect and North Dakota senior Jordan Schmaltz.

If his injury is long term, it would also be a blow to the 2015 USA World Junior Championship squad.
