Turns out a #1 vs. #2 match-up wasn't the only thing Colgate threw a wrench in at the Mariucci Classic.

#2 Ferris State became the latest victim as the Raiders, who tied #1 Minnesota and won a shootout the previous night, won the 23rd annual Mariucci Classic by a 3-0 score Saturday afternoon.

After a lifeless opening frame which saw the Raiders out-shoot Ferris State 6-4, Colgate (7-9-2, 5-3-1 ECAC) scored twice in a 3:29 span during the second period. Spiro Goulakos broke the deadlock with his second goal of the season. The junior defenseman beat FSU goaltender C.J. Motte during a power play with a slapshot from the blue line.

"It was just a big screen (in front of Motte) and I don't think the goalie saw it," Goulakos said. "It just went on net."

Mike McCann doubled the lead when he tipped Brett Corkey's shot past Motte.

Freshman Charlie Finn was once again spectacular for the Raiders, making 19 saves. None was bigger than the third period when Ferris State (15-3-2, 10-0-2 WCHA) had several grade A chances.

"We blocked more shots tonight than we did last night," Colgate head coach Don Vaughan said about Finn and his defense. "It was trying to keep (FSU) on the perimeter, trying to play good defense. Charlie made some key stops. He made it look a little easy at times, but he made a save in the third period when we're up by two - a great blocker save. If that goes in, momentum of this game could change. He was solid in net."

Darcy Murphy added a power play goal with 9:17 remaining - his tenth goal of the season - to give the underdogs a 3-0 lead.

With the loss, Ferris State, whose three losses include two to Colgate, sees its 16 game unbeaten streak comes to an end. (Union now has the nation's longest unbeaten streak at 10). Still, the Mariucci Classic ends with a big pair of games for Colgate. The Raiders currently sit in fourth place in the ECAC with a team that features 13 freshmen and sophomores.

"A weekend like this can go a long way in giving our guys confidence," Vaughan said. "I was really proud of our effort this weekend."
