Alabama-Huntsville hires Air Force assistant Mike Corbett as new head coach

Mike Corbett will lead Alabama-Huntsville's hockey program into its first season in the WCHA.

Alabama-Huntsville has named Air Force associate head coach Mike Corbett as its new head hockey coach. The Chargers had to find a replacement for Kurt Kleinendorst who left after just one season behind the UAH bench.

The Chargers will be competing in the new WCHA this season after having played as a Division I Independent since College Hockey America folded as a conference in 2010. With conference stability and a new head coach, UAH should begin to be able to attract better student-athletes to compete in the WCHA.

Corbett comes to Huntsville from Colorado Springs where he and head coach Frank Serratore had established a terrific program. Air Force made the NCAA Tournament five of the past seven seasons including a memorable East Regional in 2009 when the Falcons upset top-seeded Michigan in the first round before bowing out to Vermont in the regional finals in double overtime.
