Canisius head hockey coach Dave Smith received a contract extension through the 2016-17 season, the school announced Wednesday. Smith, a 1992 Ohio State alum, will be entering his ninth season behind the bench of the Golden Griffins this fall.
Canisius is coming off the most successful season in school history. The hockey team earned its first ever conference tournament title and a berth in the NCAA Tournament. The Golden Griffs led top-seeded and eventual NCAA finalist Quinnipiac in the third period of the first round game in the East Regional, but fell after a ferocious comeback by the Bobcats.
Alum Cory Conacher has become a household name in the National Hockey League playing for the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Ottawa Senators.
