Gaudreau, Gillies, Bazin earn major awards from Hockey East Writers and Broadcasters Association

Boston College placed four players on the first and second teams of the Hockey East Writers and Broadcasters Association All-Hockey East selections. UMass-Lowell, Merrimack and New Hampshire each had two.

The Hockey East Writers and Broadcasters Association announced their year-end awards today. The awards were voted on by print and broadcast media members.

The Hockey East Player of the Year was awarded to Boston College sophomore forward Johnny Gaudreau who led the league in scoring. The Calgary flames draft pick tallied 20 goals and 29 assists for 49 points in 33 games played this season. The Carneys Point, NJ native missed three games in December and January while representing the United States at the World Junior Championships in Ufa, Russia.

UMass-Lowell second year head coach Norm Bazin was named the Coach of the Year. Bazin led the River Hawks to a regular season title. UML became the first school outside of BC, BU, UNH and Maine to win the regular season trophy. The runner-up was second year Providence coach Nate Leaman.

The Rookie of the Year was awarded to Providence freshman goalie Jon Gillies. The South Potland, Maine native and Calgary Flames prospect was consistently strong all season long. Gillies has a 2.08 goals against average and a .931 save percentage. Outside of the games he missed during the World Junior Championships he started every game for the Friars.

The runner-up was Northeastern freshman forward Kevin Roy. The Anaheim draft pick had 17 goals and 17 assists for 34 points in 29 games played. He missed the last five games of the season with an upper body injury.
