Northern Michigan junior netminder Jared Coreau is finishing up the details on a free agent contract with the Detroit Red Wings, according to TSN's Bob McKenzie, and confirmed by Northern Michigan beat reporter Matt Wellens.
Coreau put up a more than respectable 2.70 goals against average and .919 save percentage on a Northern Michigan that struggled to a 10th place finish in the CCHA this year. Coreau's biggest asset may be that unlike other goalies to have success at the NCAA level, he has a very projectable NHL-size frame, standing at 6'4" 204 lbs.
According to Wellens, Coreau also had interest from the San Jose Sharks, New York Rangers, Edmonton Oilers, Calgary Flames, Winnipeg Jets, and Chicago Blackhawks. Coreau will most likely start his pro career with the Grand Rapids Griffins of the AHL.
