The first full weekend of conference action in Hockey East came to a close with the top two teams in the preseason polls being the only squads to sweep. UMass-Lowell swept New Hampshire and Boston College did the same to Northeastern. Let's take a look at the Three Stars of the Week in Hockey East as compiled by Jeff Cox.
#1 Star
Ross Mauermann - The Providence College junior forward had three goals and two assists on the weekend. Mauermann, the leading scorer for the Friars, had a goal and an assist on Friday in a 4-3 loss against Boston University at Agganis Arena. He helped his team salvage a split the following night. He had a hand in all three PC goals in a 3-1 win at Schneider Arena. The Janesville, Wis. native tallied the game-winner and added the empty-net goal to go along with his assist on an earlier goal. He now has seven goals and six assists in seven games this season. Mauermann has a point in all but one game this season.
#2 Star
Steven Mastalerz - The junior goaltender from North Andover, Mass. was battling his former prep school teammate this weekend in a Hockey East series against the University of Maine. Mastalerz and Black Bears goaltender Martin Ouellette were teammates at Kimball Union Academy. Mastalerz got the better of Ouellette this weekend. Mastalerz stopped 64 of 66 shots on the weekend to lead his Minutemen to a tie and a win. After two rocky outings to begin the season, he has been phenomenal in his last five starts.
#3 Star
Zack Kamrass - The UMass-Lowell junior defenseman comes from the hockey hotbed of Atlanta, Ga. The former Sioux Falls Stampede (USHL) prospect came into this weekend's series against New Hampshire with zero points on the season. He finished the weekend with four, including three assists in Saturday's 3-2 overtime triumph at New Hampshire.
Milestones and Miscellaneous notes: New Hampshire senior forward Kevin Goumas reached the century mark in career scoring with his assist in Saturday's 3-2 overtime loss against UMass-Lowell... Boston College senior forward Bill Arnold has 99 points and should be the next Hockey East player to reach 100. The only other league player within shouting distance of the 100 point plateau is Massachusetts forward Michael Pereira... Boston College junior forward Johnny Gaudreau had three goals on the weekend, including a shorthanded tally on Friday night. Eagles freshman Adam Gilmour scored his first collegiate goal in overtime on Saturday night to complete the comeback bid over Northeastern... Merrimack has now won three consecutive games after starting the season 0-3... Northeastern sophomore Kevin Roy had a point or more in six consecutive games to start the season. That streak was snapped Friday night against BC. He tallied an assist on Saturday to possibly start another run... Notre Dame senior Bryan Rust scored a shorthanded goal in Friday's 2-1 loss at Vermont. He'll go into the record books as scoring the first Hockey East conference goal for the Fighting Irish.
