Minnesota State is the destination for former Minnesota defenseman Blake Thompson

The defenseman, who left Minnesota at the end of last semester, was practicing with the Mavericks per Mankato Free-Press beat writer Shane Frederick. He'll be eligible to play for Minnesota State in a year.

When Minnesota defenseman Blake Thompson left the program at the end of the fall semester, his next destination was unknown.It now appears that the sophomore will travel 70 miles down the road in Mankato.

According to Mankato Free Press beat writer Shane Frederick, Thompson practiced with in-state rival Minnesota State today. The Eden Prairie, Minnesota native would be the second Gopher player in recent years to transfer to Minnesota State, following former Mavericks captain Michael Dorr.

Due to transfer rules, Blake has to sit out a year before he can play defense for the Mavericks, who will lose senior defensemen Tyler Elbrecht and Evan Mosey at the end of this year. He will be eligible as a junior beginning spring semester 2014.

By that time Minnesota State will be playing in a new-look WCHA with five new members.

The 6'2", 216 lbs Thompson played in 5 games for Minnesota as a freshman but failed to appear in a game this season. He had two assists for the Gophers following a USHL career that included stops with Sioux Falls and Waterloo.
