Hockey East Stat of the Week: UNH Hockey Still Impressive, Despite Rough Defensive Weekend

UNH struggled defensively for the first time all year in Colorado last weekend, but there's one area where they haven't given in.

Stat of the Week: 0

As in, the number of power play goals the eighth-best power play team unit in the country registered on Saturday evening at home. The eighth-best power play unit belonged to then-second ranked Denver, which came up against a brick wall in UNH's penalty kill. The Wildcats, who are killing penalties at a .952 clip (40-for-42 on kills), have relied upon Casey DeSmith for a lot of their power play defense, but even on a weekend when DeSmith was very sub-par, it's an encouraging sign for the 'Cats that they can still get the job done.

Honorable Mention: +5

The goal differential (in favor of Hockey East) in games between two ranked, non-conference opponents (at the time of the game) involving a Hockey East team thus far this season, a far cry from the -9 differential between all Hockey East teams and ranked opposition. That plus-five is through eight games and, you might note, is also the goal differential between BC and Dartmouth and UNH and Denver combined.
