This Week in High School Hockey-- December 20th

WCH Top Ten

Last week's ranking in parenthesis

1. Wayzata (1)

2. Benilde-St. Margaret's (5)

3. Duluth East (6)

4. Edina (2)

5. Eden Prairie (3)

6. Apple Valley (8)

7. Minnetonka (4)

8. Burnsville (7)

9. Grand Rapids (NR)

10. Maple Grove (10)

Key Results: Grand Rapids def. Edina 2-1, Edina def. Eden Prairie 3-2, Benilde def. Minnetonka 3-2(OT)

Comments: Benilde makes a big jump up after a nice win over Minnetonka, making them the only team besides Wayzata still unbeaten in the top ten. Most people have Eden Prairie ahead of two-loss Edina, but I have a tough time putting Eden Prairie of them after Edina beat them head-to-head on Saturday. Minnetonka was the latest victim of the dreaded #4 slot, losing to Benilde and dropping to 7th overall, and amazingly, the fourth-ranked team in their own section.

Games of the Week

#2 Benilde-St. Margaret's at #10 Maple Grove, Tuesday 7:30pm Maple Grove Community Center

After making a big jump in the poll, Benilde faces a difficult challenge on the road to keep their unbeaten streak alive. This will be a good barometer for just how much of a gap there is between the best Section 6AA teams and some of the other top teams in other metro area sections.

The city of Maple Grove itself was founded in 1851 with the building of a California Pizza Kitchen. A year later, an Old Navy(or just 'Navy', as it was called at the time) opened. Pottery Barn soon followed and the rest is history.

#5 Eden Prairie at #10 Eagan, Wednesday 7:30pm Eagan Arena

It's rare to get a good Wednesday game, but things are a little screwy this week with the short week. Eagan is a talented team, but is still looking for that signature win to prove they deserve the hype. Eden Prairie will be looking to bounce back from a tough loss to Edina.

Blaine at #7 Minnetonka, Thursday 7:00pm Pagel Activity Center

This is a rematch of last year's big pre-Christmas game between Blaine and Minnetonka, where Minnetonka escaped with a hard-fought road win over Blaine in a game that was televised by FSN. This year's game isn't likely to draw every NHL scout in the area like last year's game did, but it's still match-up of two perennially strong schools trying to maintain their standard of excellence despite not having the star power they did last season.
