High School Recap

Here are scores from all the college games this weekend. I'll have more on that later in the week.

For the time being, Saturday was one of the bigger days in the Minnesota State High School Hockey tournament.

The southern part of the state was hit with a pretty big snowstorm, forcing Section 1A and 1AA to postpone their games.

The best games were, as expected, at the DECC in Duluth. The first game, Cloquet's Tyler Johnson, who is going to Colorado College, made a dramatic comeback from an injury that most thought would keep him out the entire year. Johnson only played four shifts, all on the powerplay, before scoring the go-ahead against Elk River with about a minute and a half left at even strength. Cloquet added another goal just moments later to win the game 3-1.

I predicted at least one of the games in this section would go to overtime, and the second game, between Grand Rapids and Duluth East did. Minnesota recruit Pat White broke a 4-4 tie in overtime to give Grand Rapids the win.

The state's top team, Holy Angels, was given a bit of a scare from Rosemount HS, but was able to prevail 7-5. They will face Burnsville in the section 5AA final, after Burnsville beat defending section champ Eagan in overtime.

In section 7A, top seed Hermantown got a bit of a scare from International Falls, but Hermantown was able to prevail 5-2. In the other semifinal, Hibbing beat Virginia 5-1.

There were no major upsets in the tournament, which means that as we get to the later rounds, there should be some very exciting match-ups. One of the best should be in section 8AA, where Moorhead will meet Roseau in the section final. Moorhead has two wins over Roseau this year, but beating the Rams a third time should be difficult.
