Yesterday, it was announced that Tri-City Storm(USHL) head coach/general manager would be leaving the team to become head coach of the Charlottetown Islanders of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.
The Storm moved on quickly, today hiring Michigan Tech assistant coach Bill Muckalt to take over the head coach and general manager duties in Tri-City.
Muckalt had worked the past four seasons at Michigan Tech under Mel Pearson, who coached Muckalt in college at the University of Michigan. Prior to that, Muckalt worked one season as head coach of the expansion New Mexico Mustangs in the NAHL. As a player, Muckalt won two national championships as a player at Michigan and played 256 games in the NHL.
In Michigan Tech's press release, Pearson had this to say about Muckalt's departure:
"I would like to congratulate Billy. I'm thankful for the hard work and dedication he put forth into rebuilding the Michigan Tech hockey program.
"On a personal note, I'm not only losing a great coach, but a great friend. I wish Billy continued success."
