Heinrich was a one-time Minnesota-Duluth commit, but will instead head to the WHL.

Defenseman Blake Heinrich of the Sioux City Musketeers in the USHL has signed with the Portland Winterhawks of the WHL. Heinrich, a fifth round draft pick of the Washington Capitals, had previously been committed to Minnesota-Duluth, but signing with Portland negates his college eligibility.

The Winterhawks took a stab at Heinrich late in the 2012 WHL Bantam Draft as an overage pick and kept him on their protected list. Per the Winterhawk's press release, Heinrich will finish his season with the Musketeers before then joining the Winterhawks for the final six games of their season, while not being eligible to compete in the WHL playoffs.
