University of Maine forward Ryan Lomberg charged with assault

Matt Dewkett

University of Maine forward Ryan Lomberg has been charged with assault and disorderly conduct by the Orono Police Department, according to a source.

The rising-junior forward from Richmond Hill, Ontario had 11 goals and seven assists in 34 games played this season. The incident stemmed from an off-campus incident over a week ago that caused Red Gendron to return home from the college hockey coach's convention in Naples, Fla.

Lomberg has been suspended from athletic activities and his status will be decided following the completion of an internal investigation. He is due to appear in court June 17.

According to Margaret Nagle of the university's media relations office, "It's an Orono Police investigation. The school is cooperating fully with the police investigation."

"The school's conduct office will investigate, but due to student privacy laws, we cannot comment on specifics," added Nagle.
