Who would think that a man that was 5’6" 150 pounds would be a dominant force in the game of hockey? Not me. When you think of a dominate hockey player you think players like Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin, Both who are 6’ tall and 200 pounds plus. Well what about Martin St. Louis? He is small and is a goal scorer in the NHL. Well even St. Louis has 2 inches and 30 pounds on the leading scorer in college hockey. Johnny Gaurdreau has had 69 points in the regular season and 8 points already in this year’s playoffs. Gaurdeau may be small but don’t tell him that because he loves to win and never lets his size get in the way.
Gaudreau has played on a couple great teams in his day and has lead them in their successes. He started his winning ways in the USHL, for the Dubuque Fighting Saints. In 60 games with the Saints, Johnny put up 72 points, on his way to the USHL Rookie of the Year. His success created a great opportunity for his team to become champions. Gaudreau put up a team leading 11 points in the Clark Cup Playoffs. This put his first ring on his finger, being Clark Cup Champion with the Saints, in the USHL. After his dominance in the USHL, there were still many doubters that thought he could not be successful at the Division One level because of his size. Johnny took that personally and thrived at being the underdog. Boston College University was Johnny’s next stop and he was ready to prove his doubters wrong. He made a huge impact for the Eagles as a freshman putting up 44 points in 44 games. Johnny capped of his freshman year with a highlight reel goal in the National Championship game against Ferris State. The Eagles went on to win 4-1, getting Johnny his second ring in as many years. USHL Champ, National Champ, what else could he want now? How about World Junior Gold for team USA. Well that just what he did, leading team USA with 9 goals in the tournament. The World Junior Championship in 2013 gave Johnny his third ring and another reason for his doubters to become believers.
What’s next for the great Johnny Hockey? Gaudreau is drafted by the Calgary Flames and hopes to become a great scorer in NHL as he has been at all the levels he has played at so far. Many people say the "little" player won’t be able to make it in the NHL. The Flames are sure hoping his winning continue in the NHL, as they have the second worst record in the Western Conference. To those people I say, look at what he has done. Leading three teams, succeeding in three different leagues, getting three rings against NHL prospect, and being hungrier for the net than any player you have seen. He has NHL talent and is going to change his doubters into believers. But for right now Johnny has a different thing on his mind. How about a four ring in four years, he is just two games away with his Boston College Eagles from winning his second National Championship. Watch out for Johnny Hockey on Thursday night against Union, I promise, he will be sure to impress you.
Also one of this year three finalists for the Hobey Baker, and my pick to take home the award. He is the first #BicksBeauty and can’t wait for the Frozen Four on Thursday.
