The New York Rangers signed Vermont senior forward Chris McCarthy to a free agent contract on Monday afternoon. McCarthy's career with the Catamounts ended last Friday with a 5-2 NCAA tournament loss to Union. McCarthy finished his senior season as Vermont's leading scorer with 18 goals and 24 assists for 42 points in 38 games this season.
McCarthy is a 6-1 205 lbs. center originally from Collegeville, Pennsylvania. We at SBN College Hockey had McCarthy ranked 30th overall, and second among undrafted prospects (behind only draft-eligible goalie Thatcher Demko) on our list of the Top 100 Prospects in the NCAA this season. Here's what we had to say about McCarthy's game:
30. Chris McCarthy, Forward, Vermont (Free Agent)
The USNTDP product has had to overcome several serious injuries since his arrival in Burlington, but he saved his best for last in his senior campaign. The Collegeville, Pa. native is a power forward that can play both ends of the ice at the next level. He's very strong on the puck, has a good shot and has deceptively good hands. He has two shorthanded goals and has been very effective in his own end killing penalties and taking care of defensive responsibilities.
