Gophers Hockey: Zach Budish has two goals waved off in the first period

The Minnesota redshirt junior had two shots past Ryan Faragher along with a post but zero goals.

Minnesota captain Zach Budish has to be wondering if he can get a rabbit's foot or four-leaf clover between periods after the redshirt junior had not one but two potential goals in the first period waved off against St. Cloud State.

The first occurred 4:49 into the game when Budish, a Nashville Predators draft pick, tapped in a rebound from Sam Warning past Huskies goaltender Ryan Faragher. Before the puck crossed the line, however, Faragher's mask came off. That's an automatic whistle in college hockey and because of that it was called a no goal.

Budish followed that up by hitting the post and then with 9:51 remaining in the first period had his second potential goal waved off. This time his wrist shot on the power play was overturned when the referees decided that Kyle Rau was in the crease and interfered with Faragher.

Despite Budish's close-call hat trick, the Gophers are tied 1-1 with St. Cloud State after one period at the National Hockey Center. Nick Bjugstad scored for Minnesota while Joey Benik answered for the first-place Huskies.
