Trotman and Krug Sign with Boston

Two of the CCHA's top defenseman left school early to sign with the Boston Bruins over the weekend. Lake Superior junior defenseman Zach Trotman and Michigan State junior defenseman Torey Krug are the newest members of the B's.

Trotman is a pretty big defenseman at 6'3" 216 lbs., and showed some impressive scoring touch this season by netting 11 goals and 10 assists for the Lakers from the blueline. Trotman was the very last pick of the 2010 NHL Draft by the Bruins--though I would have beaten them to Trotman had anyone asked me. I noted this at the time of the pick, and I'll reiterate, but I'm not sure why more teams don't use late round draft picks on college players that had promising first years. Trotman would have been a top 5-10 free agent if the Bruins hadn't drafted him. Instead, the Bruins were able to hold his rights, and sign him without having to worry about bidding against another team.

Meanwhile, Krug is about the opposite of Trotman in terms of size, but put together an All-American-type campaign this year, and has really been the heart and soul of the Spartans the past three years. This year, he led the team in scoring with 12 goals and 22 assists. Krug is generously listed at 5'9" 175 lbs., so size will be a concern as he moves to the next level, but Krug does have the advantage of being a tremendously strong kid. Despite his size, he was clocked as having the hardest shot on Michigan State's team this year. He's also a very heady player. He's slightly smaller, but reminiscent of former Miami defenseman Andy Greene, who has gone on to a nice NHL career.

In addition to signing the two underclassmen, the Bruins also signed former 5th round pick, and graduating Northern Michigan senior Justin Florek to an entry level contract.
