TRAVERSE CITY MI - SEPTEMBER 11: Jack Campbell #1 of the Dallas Stars makes a save during NHL Prospects Tournament on Saturday September 11 2010 at Centre Ice Arena in Traverse City Michigan. (Photo by Dave Reginek/Getty Images)

We're just about two weeks shy of the two anniversary of Jack Campbell announcing that he wouldn't be sending in his letter of intent to Michigan because he wanted to play for the Windsor Spitfires and because he was going to be playing in the NHL "in a year or two". Today, he has neither of those things. As part of a fire sale to start rebuilding for the 2014 Memorial Cup, Windsor traded Campbell to Sault Ste. Marie for the most confusing list of draft picks you'll ever see. (Semi-interesting trivia: SSM GM Kyle Dubas finished runner-up to Kurt Overhardt for the right to advise Campbell many years ago when Dubas was a player rep) In fact, it looks like the only part Campbell got right about his calculation two years ago was not wanting to leave Michigan in a bad spot, which he didn't, since the Wolverines ended up with Shawn Hunwick.

That's not to criticize Campbell. But the bill of goods sold to him by Windsor was laughable at the time, and still is. Campbell is the most high profile example, but it amazes to see how many American kids that get talked into signing with a CHL team early on end up getting traded for a conditional 19th round draft pick just a year or two later. But for some reason, that never seems to make it in the recruiting pitch.

NHL.com started releasing some early mock drafts from their writers, and they were pretty kind to college hockey. Mike Morreale's draft has North Dakota recruit Stephane Matteau going 8th overall, Michigan recruit Jacob Trouba 9th overall, and Michigan forward Phil DiGiuseppe at 11th.

DiGiuseppe has made a huge move up draft lists, first with a nice performance at the NHL's R&D development camp, and then with a hot start at Michigan. The freshman has 5 goals and 4 assists through his first 8 collegiate games. DiGiuseppe was one of the pieces moved to Windsor in their fire sale on Wednesday. It's been reported that he's pretty committed to Michigan, though Windsor's gamble here is likely that DiGiuseppe maintains his first round draft status and an NHL team can convince him to sign a contract right away.

Jess Myers looks at the Minnesota-North Dakota rivalry. It is a fantastic rivalry, and I wonder what the future holds for it. Will North Dakota get Minnesota's one away non-conference series every other year, or does the rivalry not continue on an annual basis? With North Dakota admitting reliance on the Gophers this past summer, perhaps they'd be willing to take two or three trips to Mariucci for every return trip.

Omaha-native Nick Dineen will get to come home this weekend as Colorado College makes their first ever trip to Nebraska-Omaha.

USA Hockey is sending a team to the inaugural Winter Youth Olympic Games in Austria this January, and judging by the roster they put together for the event, this is going to be a pretty big-time event. That basically looks like a preliminary roster for next year's NTDP U17 team.

Notre Dame's Jeff Costello is back from injury.
