College Hockey News did a little investigating on the press release about the rumored Penn State hockey arena and it sounds like there's nothing in place. That's a real shame because I think that if college hockey is going to expand, Penn State is probably the most attractive option at the moment. If I had to guess, any thought of this back in November probably got squashed by the economic collapse. Now probably isn't the time to pay all those sunks costs involved with starting hockey programs.
Still, it's not a terrible idea to start planning for those possibilities, even if it might be a couple years down the road. The WCHA has obviously found itself caught offguard and scrambling to find a 12th team at the 11th hour to pair with Bemidji State despite the fact that this issue has been on the radar for many years. There's nothing wrong with being prepared for the future.
